During the early days of the National School of Drama in the 1960s, be it the designing of the curriculum or the appointment of right teachers, all were carried out effectively to address the then need of the society.
Established with a very strong objective, the institution has been highly effective in fulfilling it.
This educational institution's name has grown far and wide across the oceans . Those having studied here hold high positions in the field of cinema, drama and arts. It needs to be upgraded in line with the huge changes that have taken place in the education sector over the last 20 years.
It is not just enough to harp on the past glory; it is also necessary to achieve sustainable continuous growth. Consequently, need to make necessary changes from time to time after constant review of the curriculum and activities.
We must bring about changes towards a brighter future. Proper administration must be set up. It is a must to move from being a sole proprietorship to a formal entity operating as an institution managed by an experienced team. For which, we should join hands with highly expertise and needed human resources.
Another major aspect of focus for an educational institution is on research ... but this institute still offers only diploma courses. To start with, first degrees should be awarded with equal recognition to the degrees awarded by universities. Right from creating awareness on cyber crimes, the institution should display keenness to open up to various other fields.
It is not enough just to set up branches across the country. In line with the changing times, we need to take efforts to adhere to new things and move towards comprehensive and sustainable progress in various sectors. As a central government educational institution, there is greater responsibility to answer the government and the people. It is also important to act in accordance with the rules that govern the institution.
Numerous challenges are there before the eyes to bring about such changes. However, any challenges can be addressed by adhering to legislation and establishing a systematic system.
Over thousand hours of drama lie scattered simply as video recordings. Need to take efforts to formulate, document and sign deals to get them approved and upload the videos online in a well streamed manner.

-Dr Ramesh Chandra Kaur, Director, National School of Drama, Delhi.
